| DUBU |
 |
| A
ceremonial platform from Rigo (PNG) for celebration, ritual
and dance. |
 |
On
the south east coast of Papua New Guinea is a village called
Gabagaba.
According to oral history, the village was established about
17 generations ago by three brothers. Soon after the establishment
of this new village, word spread throughout the region that
this new village was a place where celebrations were continuously
happening, and it wasnt long until this village became
a stomping ground for large ceremonies and "singsings". |
 |
| People
from the surrounding area, the Rigo area began to refer to this
village as "Gabagaba" or in English "Drum Drum". |
 |
The
focal point of all dances in the village was the Dubu, a sacred
platform where ceremonies, rituals and celebrations took place.
The largest of the Dubu ceremonies was the annual harvest festival
where the chief and his clan members would cover the Dubu in
offerings of crops, pigs and decorations.
Through the influence of missionaries and modernisation, the
Dubu from Gabagaba village was destroyed in the early 60s, which
was the beginning of the end of a long tradition of dance and
drumming. |
 |
| This
performance of "DUBU" celebrates in the memory of
the Dubu and the importance of its function in Motuan society.
Many of the dances and contemporary songs in this performance
are based on musics that were originally performed at the Dubu.
Drum Drum will be joined by members of the Asia-Pacific community
for this special performance. |
 |
| In
this situation the village that we have all come to live in
is the Urban Village of Darwin, and the clans that make up that
village come from all over the Asia-Pacific. All of whom will
meet at the Dubu Star Shell to celebrate and participate in
a ceremony of generosity. |
